The one thing you develop when traveling is this unwavering stubborness. I am not saying it's a bad thing but I just don't feel someone who has never done what i am trying to do has any advice to offer me on the topic. Telling me a country you've never been to is dangerous based on what you've seen on the news is like telling me sour straws are bad for me knowing I will eat them anyways.
It's different when people tell you something based on experience and you decide to do the opposite anyways. Most people will tell you, once you get to Peru, get acclamated with Lima first before making any trips outside of the city, which makes sense. I had a week in Peru and decided I would rather get stuck in Lima as they have more flight options than Cuzco so I ignored all warnings and flew directly into Cuzco.
Cuzco was amazing, more on that in a future blog but the minute I got to Lima I felt off. My body was lethargic, stomach was worst for wear and I had the worlds worst headache. I was in the back of the taxi having more prayers than a priest and with every sharp turn or increase of speed I felt worst.
Finally I got to the Sheraton Lima and it was the most miserable twelve hours of my life. I am not sure if it was the altitude, food poisoning or just nature but I had the life knocked out of me. The next day, I was relagated to the hotel bed intaking nothing but juices and water. Listen travel isn't always pretty!
What hurt the most was I had a list of restaurants I wanted to try in Peru but the minute I attempted to leave the hotel it always got worst. By day three I managed to do two things, a walking tour I booked on Viator last minute and a Hop on Hop off bus tour of the city.
That night, I had a midnght flight back the states with one of my most dissapointing trips yet. One thing for sure, I will return to Peru and be sure to get acclimated before venturing to other cities.
