I finally made it to Trinidad

Hyatt Regency Pool

A few years back I got invited to Trinidad but never made the trip. The subsequent three times, the same thing happened. Whether it was too busy at work or couldn't make the trip, Trinidad always felt like the one place that eluded me, until now.

I travel a lot but don't take many vacations. You might be asking yourself "whats the difference?" Travel is me waking up at 6:00 am and seeing every bit of a city as I am trying to travel the world while working and vacation is me doing absolutely nothing in a country, sort of like my trip to the Dominican Republic.

The opportunity popped up for me to spend the weekend in Trinidad and after a busy few weeks at work, I needed the vacation. I set up shop in a restaurant in Terminal 5 and that was my office until my flight departed. This was my second time flying Jet Blue, the other being a trip to Guatemala.

The trip went off without a hitch and a few hours later, I landed in Trinidad. I secured my transportation via the hotel, The Hyatt Regency Trinidad and took the near 30 minute drive in the dark towards the countires capital. When I pulled up to the hotel it was close to 1:00 am. Since my flight was late, most the shops at the airport were closed by time I arrived and my dinner would have to be bakes and shark via room service.

The next day I got up, did a workout and hung around the pool for what seemed like a majority of the day. There is a cabana poolside so best belive I was well hydrated with coconut water while tearing through the pages of a few books. When the sun went down, I traded in the swim trunks for a nicer outfit and hit the sushi bar in the hotel lobby. This was by far the best sushi i'd had outside of Tokyo.

The next day mirrowed the first, gym and pool but this time I was on the hunt for a roti. This was my third day in Trinidad and I hadn't had a roti. I walked around Port of Spain to a few spots only to be told they were either sold out or wasn't making any for the day. I was so disappointed on the roti, I didn't even settle for the doubles as my heart was set on the roti.

I went on a bit of site seeing before heading back to the hotel pool. Dish of choice was bakes and shark with a mix of Shandy Carib and Coconut water. I'd rotate between swimming and laying out and then have drinks in the pool and eat when I was ready.

I had dinner on the waterfront of hotel, accompanied by renditions of Bob Marley music. I felt right at home. There were several artists and a live stage, what a great way to end the holidays. Three hours later I was back at the airport to return to the city. I owe Trinidad another trip, one where I can include Tobago and oh yea, I need a roti this time!
